Banana Split

I don’t think there has ever been a more perfect combination of ingredients in the history of the world than the banana split. The traditional banana split is served in a boat-shaped dish with long slices of bananas on the bottom (“split” bananas), one scoop each of vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry ice cream, pineapple topping served over the vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup served over the chocolate ice cream, and strawberry topping served on top of the strawberry ice cream, garnished with chopped nuts, whipping cream, and a maraschino cherry. The beautiful thing? You can break from tradition and make yours exactly how you want. (How do I like mine? Small slices of bananas so as to get some in every bite, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, caramel, marshmallow crème and a cherry.) Line up the ingredients and serve them “buffet” style so everyone can make their own just how they like it. Uh-huh. Oh yeah. Mmm-hmm.

Start by slicing bananas into a dish. Scoop your favorite flavors of ice cream and place on sliced bananas. Top with sauces. Finish with whipped cream, nuts, and cherries if desired.
