Buttermilk Syrup

buttermilk_syrup

This is, hands down, the best syrup I have ever had. Probably because it is made out of my favorite ingredients: sugar and butter. And when you add buttermilk and vanilla, the combination of flavors is absolute magic. AND . . . (I know! There’s more?!) it is such a versatile syrup. You can eat it on pancakes, waffles, crepes, French toast . . . you name it! Mark this day on your calendars, for it will be a holiday. An anniversary. Of the introduction of buttermilk syrup into your life. You’ll celebrate with gifts, fireworks, and you’ll probably make the entire selection of breakfast foods just so you can drench them in this divine magical thing we call buttermilk syrup.

2 cubes butter or margarine

1 c buttermilk

1 t baking soda

2 c sugar

2 T corn syrup

2 t vanilla

Melt butter in saucepan (choose a large saucepan as syrup will foam up while cooking). Add buttermilk, baking soda, sugar, and corn syrup. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture boils. Boil 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Serve warm.

I just read online last night that it is good on ice cream but haven’t tried it yet. It sounds amazing!!! The more foods we can pour this delicious stuff on, the better. Right Jane??

We had this at Jane’s house over Thanksgiving last year and it was AWESOME!! Can you tell me how long this keeps in the fridge? I don’t know, maybe we’ll guzzle it all down at one meal, but just in case….

    • Carol says:

Hi Suzanne! Nice hearing from you. Isn’t this syrup heaven?? It keeps in the fridge for about as long as the buttermilk would be fresh, two weeks or so. It will thicken when cold but thins out as it is reheated. Have a great day!!

    That’s very helpful, thanks!

Oh boy, we had breakfast for dinner last night and I made this syrup for the pancakes. I may or may not have been drinking it with a spoon. My husband just kept saying, “Oh MAN!” When we were finished we both licked our plates and he said, “I haven’t licked the plate in a looong time. That was a-MAZING!”
    Thanks for sharing this recipe!!
